5 Recommended Books for Student-Mountaineers

Mountaineers, prepare not only for the adventure but also for the danger and unexpected circumstances they might face on the mountain. For the beginners or let us call them  “the students”, must know the basics of Hiking and Backpacking.



The knowledge about Mountaineering can be acquired in two ways:


  • Knowledge thru Reading
  • Knowledge thru Experience



We all want to create our adventure and have fun, but we must prepare and ready ourselves for the unexpected things we will face through the journey. I recommend 5 books that will serve as a guide as you begin your backpacking adventure.





Backpacking: One Step a Time, by Harvey Manning. This book will help your soul fo to the timeless place, where you can play and enjoy in outdoors. The author reminds us that there is a limited amount of wilderness to be enjoyed by a huge amount of people. The book will help you realize how to enjoy the wilderness, without destroying the reason you escape the city life.





The Complete Walker IV, by Colin Fletcher. This is the new edition of the classic book “The Hiker’s Bible” This book will lead you through ethical, technological, and spiritual changes.





Trail Food: Drying and Cooking Food for Backpacking and Paddling, by Alan Kesselheim. We all know that the most essential to bring in the outdoors are, food and water. This book will help you bring the real meals, this is all about fulfilling your food fantasies.



Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, by the Mountaineers. The book is all about climbing fundamentals, climbing techniques, safety procedures, and emergency responses.






Mountaineering Maps of the World, by Yoshizawa. If your body, heart and soul are ready, then you can make notes when and where your next climb is. This book will help your adventure list for your mighty students essays, and set your goals.
